Dong Wu Silk Hall, Beijing, China

Another unexpected surprise during my travel to Beijing. This silk factory was really impressive.
To view all the pictures CLICK HERE.
Most of us have heard that silk comes from "worms" (caterpillars), however I had never full understood what that meant.
To view all the pictures CLICK HERE.
It was incredible to see how the material is transformed from a cocoon into a thread. An insanely fascinating process to witness.

In the pictures (above and below) you can see how the material can also be stretched and used in a less controlled manner to create stuffing for bedding.

I definitely have a new found appreciation for silk after witnessing and understanding what an unbelievable process silk production really is.

If you would like to view the full album of pictures, please feel free to follow the link provided in the image captions.

The display floor filled with silk was an excellent way to wrap up the silk factory.

Until next time.

Ming Dynasty Tombs, Beijing, China

A difficult place to describe, the location for the Tombs of the Ming Dynasty (as almost all the city of Beijing) was chosen and laid-out in accordance with the principles of Feng-Shui.
To view all the pictures from the Ming Dynasty Tombs CLICK HERE.
In this place in particular you can feel a different sort of energy. Perhaps it is just in the ancient trees, or the stories one can extract from every corner of this place. Whatever it is. . . It is quite special and palpable.

Walking into and through the gardens surrounding the tombs, the scenery is vibrant yet peaceful.

After descending several stair cases, one finally enters the tomb/mausoleum. The lighting was not the best, so I apologize for the quality of these pictures

A very impressive feature within the tomb are the imperial thrones, featured here is the Emperor's thrown. Decorated with a dragon motif, as the dragon is the traditional Chinese symbol for male power.

The Empress's thrown is decorated with a phoenix motif. . . I will let you ponder that symbolism for yourself.

Further along in the tomb we can admire the replicas of the caskets that housed the remains and treasures of the Emeror. I believe the Empress and possibly some other people where entombed here as well, but don't quote me on that. It's difficult to get good/accurate information and there is a lot of things that get lost in translations as well.

After exiting the tombs there are a few exhibition halls with treasures from the tombs.

One thing I can understand in any language is gold and silver. I was really impressed as these really are some of the finest gold and silver objects I have ever beheld. Even the simple ingots and coins are done in the most aesthetically pleasing and well executed manner.

Needless to say the most intricate objects where even more breath taking and impressive.
If you would like to see all the pictures from the Ming Dynasty Tombs, please feel free to follow the links provided in the picture captions.
I will be back again soon with more.
Until next time.
